Baptism and Launching of OPV-84 Cabo Odger

August 8, 2016

With the presence of Her Excellency the President of the Republic, Ms. Michelle Bachelet Jeria, of the Minister of National Defence, the Commander in Chief of the Navy and high-level regional, navy and military authorities, the fourth OPV of a series of 6 built for the Chilean Navy, the OPV 84 “CABO ODGER” was launched on August 3, 2016.

The construction and testing of this new unit will continue and it will be ready for final delivery to the Navy next year.

It is named after Engine Room Corporal Leopoldo Odger, who on August 15, 1965, in a strong storm, and after the “Janequeo” cutter had capsized, did not hesitate to jump repeatedly into the sea to save his shipwreck mates; after saving two crewmen he jumped back in the water to get a third one, but he was not strong enough and was not able to get back to land.

The Godmother of the vessel was Ms. Jeanette Silva de Larrañaga, who in the name of God, Country and the Chilean Navy baptized it with the name “CABO ODGER”. Instants later, amidst the whistles and sirens of the ships located in the Talcahuano Harbour and the expressions of jubilation of the workers of ASMAR, it touched sea for the first time at 11:52 hours.
